Detail Suzuki DT30

Suzuki' s DT30 provides excellent value among 30hp two strokes for saltwater anglers, reports Andrew Norton Released around 25 years ago, the DT30 has been one of Suzuki' s most popular two-stroke outboards and has scored an impressive reputation for reliability and fuel efficiency. The DT30 has the largest piston displacement of all 30hp two strokes, giving it plenty of torque for pushing tiller steer hulls to around 4.3m. Its simple twin-cylinder, single-carbie powerhead is straightforward to maintain and service and the 100: 1 fuel/ oil ratio ensures it runs much cleaner than other two strokes in this power range such as the Tohatsu 30 and Mariner/ Mercury 30 LW. Like the Tohatsu, it has dual cooling water intakes so if the main intakes clog, the auxiliary pick-up beneath the anti-ventilation plate will still provide sufficient cooling water to prevent the powerhead from overheating. Reports from operators who have used the DT30 on shallow weed-infested waterways such as the NSW central coast lakes indicate the DT30 survives much better than its Johnson 30 competition, which has only one set of intakes. On average usage it also consumes around 20 per cent less fuel than the cross-flow Johnson. Since its original release as a 50: 1 engine, the DT30 has been steadily upgraded and now has an upfront gearshift, which is much easier to use than the previous side shift lever. However, the manual reverse lock knob on the transom brackets and the flick-up shallow water drive setting should be redesigned to make the engine more user-friendly. The sealing rubber on the lower cowl should be relocated to the upper cowl to reduce unsightly scratches on the sprayed finish when the upper cowl is removed for powerhead servicing. Mounted on a Blue Fin 4.2 Mangrove Jack ' top end' style of dinghy and spinning the standard 12-inch pitch alloy prop, the demo DT30 had no trouble pushing our load of two adults, which brought the total displacement to 470kg. Fitted with electric start in addition to the manual overhead recoil starter, the demo engine started instantly hot or cold and warmed quickly from cold. Providing the anti-ventilation plate was kept immersed, power astern was good and, despite running on a 25: 1 break-in mix, oil smoke appeared only below 1500rpm. Above 2000rpm, vibration levels were almost as low as Yamaha' s three-cylinder two-stroke 30D. Trolling at 4.1km/ h on 780rpm, the DT30 used 1.2lt/ h and a clean plane was achieved at 21.5km/ h on 3600rpm with the trim rod set on the third ( middle) hole for the best compromise between planing ease and wide open throttle speeds. It cruised best at 4300rpm, where we averaged 32km/ h using 9lt/ h and, through full-lock figure of eight turns at these revs, no prop ventilation occurred and the hull remained fully on the plane. Slightly under-propped for this load, the WOT average was 42.9km/ h on 5690rpm using 13.5lt/ h. Although the engine was quite raucous at these revs we could still talk without having to shout. Powerhead access is typically Suzuki and very good. The spark plugs and carburettor were easy to reach. Suzuki Marine recommends servicing the DT30 every 50 hours or six months after the initial check-up at 20 hours and the waterpump impeller should be replaced every 100 hours or once a year. Suzuki' s DT30 compares well to its direct twin-cylinder Yamaha 30H competition ( also 100: 1) . In addition to the upfront gearshift, it has a slight edge for throttle responsiveness and overall performance. It' s also marginally smoother across the entire rev range. For saltwater anglers who sprint to their favourite fishing spot then anchor or drift fish, the DT30 is excellent value for money for a two-stroke 30. The warranty period is two years for recreational usage.
